The Ambassador

Eoin O'Leary

During his distinguished career, Mr. O'Leary has held several significant positions. From 2017 to 2020, he served as Ambassador to China in Beijing. Prior to that, he was the Director General of the European Neighbourhood and Policy Division (ENP) within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 2016 to 2017. He also held the role of Director General of the European Union Division in the same department between 2015 and 2016. From 2013 to 2015, Mr. O'Leary was the Ambassador to Russia, stationed in Moscow. Earlier in his career, he served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna from 2007 to 2013.

Before these appointments, Mr. O'Leary was Assistant Secretary in the European and International Affairs Division of the Department of the Taoiseach from 2001 to 2007. He also worked as Assistant Principal/Principal Officer in both the European and International Affairs Division and the Economic and Social Policy Division within the Department of the Taoiseach from 1995 to 2001.

Mr. O'Leary holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Mathematics from St. Patrick's College. Additionally, he has a Diploma in Legal Studies from King's Inns and is a qualified Barrister at Law from the same institution.
