Ambassador Miguel Maria Simões Coelho de Almeida e Sousa, born on August 1, 1959, has built a distinguished career in diplomacy, marked by a series of significant appointments and roles both domestically and internationally. Educated with a Law Degree from the University of Lisbon, Ambassador de Almeida e Sousa has leveraged his legal background to navigate complex diplomatic landscapes.
In his most recent role, since 2017, Ambassador de Almeida e Sousa has served as Portugal's Ambassador to Ireland, where he has contributed to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Prior to this, he held the position of Ambassador in various key postings, including as Ambassador of Portugal to the State of Israel in 2012.
His career highlights include serving as Minister Plenipotentiary of 1st class in 2007 and holding pivotal roles within Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These include Deputy Director General for Economic Affairs in 2006, Deputy Director General for Multilateral Affairs in 2005, and Chief of Staff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2004. He began his diplomatic journey in 1983 upon admission to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, progressing through various roles including Second Secretary of Embassy at the Portuguese Permanent Representation to the European Communities in Brussels in 1989 and Third Secretary of Embassy in 1987.
