Giovanni Pugliese

Giovanni Pugliese was born on July 5, 1962, in Sydney, Australia. He completed his studies in Political Science at the "La Sapienza" University in Rome in 1986.

In 1988, he joined the diplomatic service of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Political Affairs Section/NATO Office). His first overseas posting came in January 1991 when he assumed the position of First Commercial Secretary in Beijing. In 1994, he was appointed to the Permanent Mission to International Organizations in Geneva, where he primarily worked on WTO negotiations.

Pugliese returned to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome in 1998, joining the UN Office of the Political Affairs Section, focusing on the Security Council and international peacekeeping operations. In 2002, he was assigned to the Permanent Representation of Italy to the European Union, where he dealt with matters relating to the European Parliament's work and scope, dossiers in the areas of culture, telecommunications, and energy, as well as EU relations with Russia and former Soviet republics.

Ambassador Pugliese moved to New York in 2006 to join Italy's Permanent Mission to the United Nations. His responsibilities included coordinating Italian activities in various UN General Assembly committees. In 2009, he took charge of the Disarmament and

Non-Proliferation Department at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. January 2011 saw him become the Deputy Italian Ambassador in Berlin.

In 2015, he was once again sent to Brussels as Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the European Union, responsible for the Councils of Energy-Telecommunications-Transport, Competitiveness-Industry-Research, Culture-Education-Youth-Sport, Environment-Climate, Agriculture-Fisheries, and Labor-Social Policy.

In 2018, he became Diplomatic Advisor to the Italian Minister for Economic Development, Labor, and Social Policy. In 2019, he took over as head of the Press Department of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and became the spokesperson for the Foreign Minister.

From November 2020 to January 2024, Giovanni Pugliese served as the Italian Ambassador to Algeria.

Since February 20, 2024, he has been the Italian Ambassador to Austria.
