The Ambassador
Frédéric Joureau
Frédéric Joureau has been serving as the Chargé d'affaires a.i. at the French Embassy in Austria since April 18, 2024. In this role, he leads the diplomatic mission, representing French interests and priorities in Austria, following the departure of Ambassador Gilles Pécout, who assumed the presidency of the French National Library.
Mr. Joureau brings a wealth of diplomatic and international experience to his position. Prior to his current appointment, he served as First Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy in Vienna since August 2023. His diverse career in the French diplomatic service includes postings as First Counsellor in Antananarivo, Madagascar (2019-2021) and Helsinki, Finland (2009-2012), as well as Consul General in Saarbrücken, Germany
(2012-2016).
Throughout his career, Mr. Joureau has demonstrated versatility and adaptability, taking on various roles within the French diplomatic corps. He has served as a reinforcement diplomat at the French Embassy in Madrid and the Consulate General in Hamburg, where he also acted as interim director of the French Institute. His experience extends beyond traditional diplomacy, including a secondment to the Ministry of Economy, Finance, and Recovery as Director of International Relations for the Nuclear Safety Authority (2016-2019).
Mr. Joureau's background also includes experience in the private sector, having been seconded to SAFRAN as a diplomatic advisor to the General Director for International Development (2007-2009). This mix of public and private sector experience equips him with a broad perspective on international relations and business dynamics.
Born on February 15, 1966, Mr. Joureau began his career as an active-duty officer in the French Military Technical and Administrative Corps at the Directorate General of Armaments (1987-2005). He later transitioned to the diplomatic service, joining the corps of Foreign Affairs Advisors in 2005.
Fluent in French, German, and English, Mr. Joureau's linguistic skills facilitate his ability to engage effectively in multilateral diplomacy and foster Franco-Austrian relations. His diverse background and extensive experience in various aspects of international relations make him well-suited to lead the French diplomatic mission in Austria and promote French interests in the region.
