The Ambassador
Merle Pajula
Ambassador Merle Pajula joined the Foreign Service in 1992. She has served as a diplomat in the Press and Information department and the department of European Affairs. From 2010–2014, she was the director of the policy planning division of the MFA. Merle Pajula served as the Permanent Representative of Estonia to the United Nations from 2000-2004 and was appointed as the Ambassador to Finland from 2006-2010 and to Sweden from
2015-2019. Before assuming her current position, she worked as the head of the foreign relations department of the Chancellery of the Estonian Parliament.
Merle Pajula is currently Estonia’s Ambassador to Austria, Slovakia, Switzerland, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations Office at Vienna and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
History
Austria and Estonia established diplomatic relations after Estonia regained independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Austria recognised Estonia’s independence on 28 August 1991, and diplomatic relations were established on 8 January 1992. Estonia opened its embassy in Vienna, while Austria established diplomatic representation in Tallinn.
Relations are considered friendly and increasingly close, particularly since Estonia joined the European Union and NATO in 2004. Austria and Estonia cooperate within EU structures, the OSCE, and the United Nations, with particular attention to digitalisation, cybersecurity, innovation, and democratic resilience.
Economic relations have expanded in recent years, especially in technology, e-government solutions, tourism, and research cooperation. Cultural diplomacy also plays an important role, with Estonia promoting its digital society, literature, music, and innovation ecosystem in Austria.
