The Ambassador

Vito Cecere

Vito Cecere has been serving as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Austria since September 2023. In this capacity, he promotes Germany's bilateral interests and priorities in Austria, working to enhance and strengthen diplomatic, cultural, and commercial ties between the two nations. Ambassador Cecere places a strong emphasis on fostering international cooperation in education, science, and research.

Ambassador Cecere brings extensive experience in public service, particularly in the fields of foreign policy and public administration. Prior to his current role, he was the Special Representative for Foreign Science Policy, Foreign Educational Policy, and Research Policy from 2019 to 2023. Between 2014 and 2019, he served as the Special Representative for Information Technology, and from 2011 to 2014, he was the Head of Communications, promoting Germany's image abroad. His previous roles include Head of Cultural and Media Relations with Europe, North America, Turkey, Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia from 2010 to 2011, and Head of the Cultural Department at the German Embassy in Rome in 2010.

Before his ambassadorial appointment, Ambassador Cecere held various significant positions, including Head of the Coordination Staff at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs from 2007 to 2009, and Head of the Leadership and Planning Staff from 2005 to 2007. He has also worked in the private sector, leading the Public Affairs department at Vodafone D2 GmbH from 2003 to 2004. His early career involved various roles within the SPD party and the Federal Government, focusing on public relations and planning.

Ambassador Cecere studied History and Political Science at the University of Hanover, where he earned his Magister Artium degree. He also studied abroad at the Università degli Studi di Bologna and was a scholarship holder of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung from 1991 to 1995.

Born on February 20, 1967, in Bremen, Ambassador Cecere is married and has two children. He is committed to leveraging his extensive background in both the public and private sectors to advance Germany's international relations and collaborative efforts in Austria and beyond.
