Georgios Iliopoulos

Georgios Iliopoulos has been serving as the Ambassador of Greece to Austria and Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna since November 2023. In this role, he represents Greece's interests and priorities in Austria, working to strengthen bilateral relations and advance Greek positions in international forums.

Ambassador Iliopoulos brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to his position, with a career spanning over three decades in the Greek foreign service. Born in 1961 in Athens, he holds a degree in Philosophy, Language, and Literature from the University of Athens and is a graduate of the National School of Public Administration.

Prior to his current appointment, Ambassador Iliopoulos served as Director General for Finance at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens. His diplomatic career includes several high-profile postings, such as Ambassador of Greece to the People's Republic of China and Mongolia (2019-2022), Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina (2016-2019), and Consul General of Greece in New York (2012-2016).

Ambassador Iliopoulos has demonstrated versatility in his roles, having served in various capacities across Europe, Africa, and Asia. His experience includes positions as Deputy Head of Mission in Copenhagen, Consul in Cape Town, and First Secretary at the Greek Embassy in Helsinki. He has also held key positions within the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Director of the IT and Communications Department and roles in the UN Department and the Office of the Director General for Political Affairs.

Throughout his career, Ambassador Iliopoulos has gained expertise in diverse areas of diplomacy, including bilateral and multilateral relations, consular affairs, and management of diplomatic missions. His background in IT and communications adds a valuable technological perspective to his diplomatic work.

Ambassador Iliopoulos is multilingual, which enhances his ability to engage effectively in international diplomacy. His diverse experiences across different regions and in various diplomatic roles equip him well to represent Greek interests in Austria and at international organizations in Vienna.
