Malam Djassi was born the 5. 11. 1958 in Bissau. He is married, has 3 children and lives in Bairro de Belém, in Bissau. He did a Master in Historical Studies at the University of Porto in Portugal. In 1990 he got a special diploma "Diplomacy in international organisations and multilateral negotiations" at the International Institute for Public Administration (IIAP) in Paris.

He first became Editor of the newspaper “Nô pintcha” and Portuguese teacher at the Kwame N’Krumah National High School in Bissau. Then, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1987 to 1989. He became Deputy Head of the Minister's Office and after that Head of the State Secretary's Office from 1989 to 1992. 1999-2000, he was at the Head of the Africa desk in the Department for Africa, Asia and Oceania, 2000–2002 Head of the Europe desk in the Department for Europe and America, 2002–2004 Director of the Department for Europe and America; 1992–1997 First Secretary, Embassy of Guinea-Bissau, Lisbon; 1997–1999 Director of National Defense, Cabinet of Ministers; 2004–2007 Chargé d’Affaires, Embassy of Guinea-Bissau, Havana; 2007–2009 Director of Bilateral Affairs at the General Directorate of Foreign Affairs; since April 2009 Senior Advisor to the State Secretary at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Since 2012 he is the Ambassador to Germany (based in Brussels). He speaks Portuguese, Spanish, French, English.
