The Ambassador
H.E. Gum Dominic Matiok

His Excellency Gum Dominic Matiok was appointed as the Ambassador of the Republic of South Sudan to the Federal Republic of Germany on 18 December 2024. Born on 1 January 1966, Ambassador Matiok is married and the father of six children.
With a professional career spanning over three decades in diplomacy, education, and public service, Ambassador Matiok brings to his post a wealth of experience in international cooperation, academic instruction, and public communication.
Prior to his appointment, he served as Deputy Head of Mission and Permanent Representative of the Embassy of South Sudan in Germany until the end of 2024. Between July 2022 and May 2023, he held the position of Chargé d’affaires at the same mission, where he was instrumental in maintaining and strengthening bilateral relations between South Sudan and Germany.
Ambassador Matiok’s distinguished public service began in Sudan, where he worked extensively at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 2008 to 2020. He previously held key roles in the Ministry of National Industry in Khartoum, serving as Information Officer (1997–1999) and later as Inspector for Education and Training (2000). In parallel with his government roles, he was actively involved in academia as a Teaching Assistant and Lecturer in Social Sciences at the Upper Nile University between 2000 and 2007.
In addition to his formal assignments, Ambassador Matiok dedicated over 15 years (1991–2007) as a volunteer primary school teacher under the Catholic Archdiocese of Khartoum, reflecting his deep commitment to education and community development.
Academically, he holds a Master’s degree in Social Sciences with distinction from the University of Gezeria, Wad Medani, Sudan (2003–2007), a postgraduate diploma in Information and Communication Sciences from the University of Khartoum (1994–1996), and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University, Egypt (1986–1990).
He is fluent in English and Arabic and speaks Dinka (Jieng dialect) as his native language.
History
The Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Berlin was opened in the autumn of 2012 and can be found in the heart of the city. The diplomatic relationship with the German government was established right at the beginning of independence in 2011. Germany was the president of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) at the time when independence was declared. Germany has had a longstanding relationship with South Sudan during its struggle for independence.
