When Austrian president Alexander Van der Bellen was giving farewell to the Austrian football team for EURO 2024, he emphasized on the potential of football to connect across all borders.

Austrian president Alexander Van der Bellen has long led under the motto of a “new togetherness” where countries come together to overcome their differences and achieve regional and global cooperation for shared development.

Van der Bellen has emphasized that countries need to “overcome the  destructive nationalism that has resulted in two terrible world wars”, as he expressed in his speech on the 68th Austrian Day of the city of Feldkirch.

European unity has been a focal point in Van der Bellen’s policy, which was reinstated when he was giving farewell to the Austrian national team for the EURO 2024 Tournament.

The President took the opportunity to discuss the potential of EURO 2024 to transcend beyond a sports tournament and become a bridge of connection between nations.

“When people all over the continent gather in front of the screens at the same time for public viewing and cheer, celebrate and rejoice together, one thing becomes clear: the EURO is not just a tournament.”, said Van der Bellen.

For him, the EURO 2024 is an opportunity to celebrate Europe and its diversity, freedom, and team spirit.

“I don't think that's so unimportant in times when the things that divide us are often highlighted. Football connects us across all borders.”, shared Van der Bellen.

He expressed his belief in the potential of Austria’s national team despite coming against strong opponents such as France, Netherlands, and Poland.

This year is the 4th participation of the country in the European tournament since 2008.

Van der Bellen took pride in the growth of the Austrian team and assured that one thing is certain: Entire Europe will be watching!
