Vienna has been the host city to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s climate change conference Austria World Summit since the creation of the initiative in 2017. President Van der Bellen appears every year as a patron speaker to remind of the dangers of climate change and the urgent need for global action.

The 2024 summit ran under the banner “Be Useful: Tools for a Healthy Planet” and was held at Vienna’s Hofburg, the official residence of the President of Austria.

Representatives from different industries and sectors took part. The film and TV sector is increasingly engaged with the problem of climate change, especially with regards to reducing the footprint of productions. Klemens Hallmann presented his Kate Winslet-narrated documentary DreamScapes, endorsed by the WWF.

The appropriate people responsible for environmental policy in the EU and the USA were also guests in Vienna - the Vice President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefcovic, and John Podesta, the US President's special envoy for climate. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was actually expected, but according to a spokesman for the EU Commission, Šefcovic was asked to represent her because she had internal meetings in Brussels.

The aim of the conference is to bring together stakeholders from politics, civil society, and business from all over the world to discuss the challenges in front of climate protection.

"Ultimately it is about politics, and this must create a fair environment so that it is easier for everyone to take climate protection measures - and it is also up to politicians to ensure that no one continues to harm us”, emphasized Van der Bellen.

“The nearest habitable planet is 4.2 light years (around 40 trillion kilometers) from Earth. So, there is no alternative unless you happen to have a ‘warp drive in the garage’.”, continued the Federal President.
