This holiday in Germany is to commemorate a hugely significant historical event. The celebration is on October 3rd which is for German Unity and is considered a nationwide public holiday. It commemorates German reunification in 1990, when the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) officially joined the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany).

In Berlin, this historic event is traditionally celebrated with a three-day festival around Platz der Republik at the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate. In that area, various stages host live bands and stands sell food, drinks and sweets. Musicians, comedians, poetry slammers and actors present their art at the festival which is free for everyone to enjoy.
