Europe is currently confronting the most perilous security environment it has faced in decades. Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine continues to escalate, with Russia gradually gaining an upper hand. This shift in momentum can be largely attributed to delays by Western nations in providing timely aid and ramping up defense production. A Russian victory in Ukraine poses a significant threat, as it may embolden President Vladimir Putin to directly challenge NATO's Article 5, which could have disastrous implications.

In addition to the eastern front, threats are also emerging from the south. The risk of an all-out conflict between Israel and Iran is increasing, adding another layer of complexity to Europe’s security landscape. Compounding these issues is the looming uncertainty surrounding the upcoming US election, which could have profound effects on America's role in transatlantic security.

The upcoming discussion aims to address several critical questions:

  1. Future Security Threats: What security challenges should Europeans anticipate over the next decade? How can they prepare for these threats effectively?
  2. Russia’s Trajectory: What will Russia’s geopolitical stance be following Putin’s current term in office? How will this affect European security dynamics?
  3. US Election Impact: What implications might the US election have for America's involvement in transatlantic security? How can Europe adapt to potential shifts in US foreign policy?
  4. Roles of the EU and NATO: What will be the distinct roles of the European Union and NATO in safeguarding Europe's security? How can these institutions complement each other?
  5. Military Capability Development: How can European nations develop the necessary military capabilities to respond to evolving threats? What strategies should be implemented to enhance defense readiness?
  6. UK’s Role in Europe’s Security: What role will the United Kingdom play in the future security architecture of Europe post-Brexit? How can the UK collaborate with European partners to address common security challenges?

This panel brings together esteemed experts from various fields to explore these pressing issues. Their insights and recommendations will be crucial for shaping effective security policies and ensuring a stable and secure future for Europe.

The panel features Claudia Major, the Head of the International Security Research Division at the German Institute for International & Security Affairs (SWP). Major’s extensive expertise in international security will provide invaluable insights into Europe’s defense strategies. Joining her is Jana Puglierin, the Head of the Berlin Office at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Puglierin’s knowledge of European foreign policy will help in understanding the broader geopolitical implications of current security threats.

Luigi Scazzieri, a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for European Reform, will contribute his research on European defense and security policy, offering a detailed analysis of potential future scenarios. Michael Scharfschwerdt, the Director of Policy Planning at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, will bring a governmental perspective, outlining how policy planning can address these complex challenges.

Together, these distinguished speakers will provide a comprehensive overview of Europe’s security landscape and discuss strategies to bolster resilience against emerging threats.
