The Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Berlin commemorated the 13th anniversary of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on March 29, 2024, with a panel discussion held online.

This significant event attracted Ethiopians as well as Ethiopian Germans in Germany and the mission’s jurisdiction, celebrating the progress and ongoing support for one of Africa’s most important infrastructure projects.

Ambassador Fekadu Beyene Ayana, the special envoy and plenipotentiary ambassador of EFDR in Germany and the countries covered by the mission, opened the panel discussion. Ambassador Beyene highlighted the dam’s construction as a symbol of Ethiopian resilience and pride, emphasizing its self-financed development as a monumental display of national determination. He passionately called on all Ethiopians to continue their vital support until the project’s completion.

The day’s guest of honor, Dr Engineer Seleshi Bekele, the special envoy and plenipotentiary ambassador of EFDR to the United States and the chief negotiator of the GERD, provided an insightful presentation. He discussed the dam’s critical role in boosting Ethiopia’s energy capabilities and highlighted the potential benefits for tourism and economic development once completed. Dr Bekele also addressed the challenges of the Nile water rights that have historically isolated Ethiopia in regional agreements, explicitly referencing the 1959 treaty, which Ethiopia did not accept.

The event allowed for a lively exchange of ideas and feedback, with many Ethiopians and Ethiopian Germans participating in the discussion, offering questions and comments. This interactive dialogue underlined the community’s engagement and commitment to the GERD’s success.

The panel concluded with a collective affirmation from the Ethiopian diaspora to persist in their support, contributing both financially and intellectually to the dam’s completion. This showcased the unity and forward-looking spirit of the Ethiopian people, both within Ethiopian and amongst the Ethiopian Diaspora.

This anniversary event not only celebrated the past achievements but also reinforced the ongoing efforts and collaboration required to complete the GERD, symbolizing hope and development for Ethiopia’s future.
