The Ambassador
H.E. Juan Carlos Ojeda Viglione
Born on November 14, 1958, in Montevideo, Uruguay, H.E. Juan Carlos Ojeda Viglione embarked on a distinguished diplomatic career that spans decades and continents. He holds a degree in Diplomacy from the Universidad de la Republica in Montevideo, supplemented by studies in Law at the same institution. His linguistic prowess includes fluency in English and French, with additional proficiency in Portuguese, Italian, and Arabic.
Since joining the Foreign Service as a Third Secretary on March 23, 1982, H.E. Juan Carlos Ojeda Viglione has navigated a diverse array of roles within Uruguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His career highlights include significant postings across the globe, including diplomatic missions in Egypt, Japan, Israel, and the Dominican Republic, among others.
His tenure has been marked by numerous leadership positions, including Director of the Multilateral Affairs Division on multiple occasions and Ambassadorial roles in Armenia, Pakistan, and Iran concurrently. Notably, he served as the Director of the MFA’s Multilateral Affairs Division from January 2017 to July 2019 and again from December 2009 to February 2011.
In his current capacity as Ambassador to the Republic of Austria and Permanent Representative to key international organizations in Vienna, H.E. Juan Carlos Ojeda Viglione oversees Uruguay’s engagements with the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
H.E. Juan Carlos Ojeda Viglione’s dedication to international diplomacy extends beyond formal roles. He has participated in pre-deployment training courses for Uruguayan troops involved in Peacekeeping Operations and represented Uruguay in pivotal international conferences. Notable among these are his roles as a delegate to the United Nations 49th and 57th Committees for Program and Coordination, the International Conference of Pilot Countries of the United Nations Program “DaO” in Kigali, Rwanda, and the XVI Summit Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran.
His contributions have been recognized through his involvement in various committees and organizations, including the Permanent Committee of the International Organization of the Francophony (OIF) and the National Authorities Meetings of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPAQ) in The Hague.
Throughout his career, H.E. Juan Carlos Ojeda Viglione has exemplified Uruguay’s commitment to multilateralism, peacekeeping, and international cooperation, leaving a lasting impact on global diplomatic efforts.
