Fred Fleitz discusses U.S. national security strategy and Europe’s role
February 05th, 2026In the lead-up to the Munich Security Conference, Fred Fleitz, Vice Chairman of the American Security Program at the America First Policy Institute, undertook a multi-city visit to Germany, beginning in Berlin, to share his perspectives on the Trump Doctrine and its implications for transatlantic security. The visit formed part of a broader effort to engage in dialogue on contemporary security challenges and the future of cooperation between the United States and Europe.
During his engagements, Mr Fleitz met with German opinion leaders, parliamentary staff members, and young professionals for discussions on “The Trump National Security Strategy and America’s Vital Alliance with Europe.” The exchanges were characterised by open and substantive dialogue, reflecting a shared interest in strengthening mutual understanding on strategic priorities and policy approaches.
Key topics addressed included NATO modernisation, the war in Ukraine, the importance of more balanced defence contributions, the reduction of regulatory barriers, and approaches to countering China’s malign influence. Representatives of partner organisations, including the German-American and the Foreign and Security Policy Associations of Parliamentary Staffers, as well as Junge DGAP, contributed to the discussions, which focused on shared risks, shared responsibilities, and common strategic objectives.
Mr Fleitz underscored a mutual interest in fostering a stronger and more capable Europe, highlighted Germany’s growing leadership role within NATO, and emphasised the importance of robust transatlantic economic ties that deliver benefits to both sides. Following the Berlin programme, the next stop of his visit was the U.S. Consulate General in Frankfurt, where further exchanges were scheduled to continue the dialogue.
