The South African Embassy and Nelson Mandela School Unite for Mandela Day
Celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day with Community Service in Berlin
July 23rd, 2024On July 18, in the spirit of Ubuntu, staff members of the South African Embassy joined students of the Nelson Mandela School in Berlin to help prepare the school for the upcoming academic year. This collaboration was in honour of Nelson Mandela International Day, a day dedicated to community service and embodying the values of the iconic leader.
Nelson Mandela International Day, declared by the United Nations in November 2009, honours the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. It celebrates his values of service, community, and equality. The day is a call to action for people everywhere to take responsibility for making their world a better place, one action at a time, just as Nelson Mandela did. The slogan for this day is “It’s in your hands,” encouraging individuals to contribute 67 minutes of their time to their communities. These 67 minutes represent the years that Nelson Mandela dedicated to fighting for freedom and equality.
As Nelson Mandela famously said, “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.” The joint efforts of the South African Embassy staff and the Nelson Mandela School students are a testament to this enduring message, showcasing a commitment to community and positive change.
