The event featured a keynote speech by H.E. Ambassador Maurice Makoloo, Chair of the Vienna-based African Group, who praised the substantial efforts made in promoting peaceful uses of nuclear technology in Africa.
Ambassador Makoloo emphasized the key role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Director General Rafael Grossi in supporting Africa, particularly through initiatives like the Rays of Hope and Atoms4Food programs. These initiatives aim to enhance cancer diagnosis and treatment capabilities, while also contributing to food security, addressing some of the continent’s most pressing challenges. However, the Ambassador also issued a call to action, encouraging the remaining 11 African countries to accede to the revised AFRA Agreement, which has been in force since April 2020.
In closing, Ambassador Makoloo reiterated the significance of AFRA as a platform for south-south cooperation in nuclear technology, helping African nations achieve socio-economic growth through peaceful nuclear applications. His words underscored the shared responsibility of all African Member States to invest in and harness nuclear technology to tackle issues such as healthcare, food security, and sustainable development.
