Preserving Transatlantic diaspora Heritage Within the Austrian Historical Memory

The Wien Museum at Karlsplatz hosted a landmark contemporary exhibition titled "Viena Latina: Living Between Worlds," running from March 5 to May 31, 2026, to examine the historical trajectory of the Latin American diaspora. Funded directly by the European Union’s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) program, the initiative reflects a sophisticated model of cultural institutional cooperation.
The core objective of the project centered on compiling the diverse migration experiences of approximately 20,000 people of Latin American and Caribbean descent residing in Vienna. Through comprehensive institutional partnerships, the initiative successfully constructed a multi-voiced archive that enriches Austria's broader historical memory.
The exhibition framework presented deeply personal narratives through curated sets of oral history interviews, photographs, legal documents, and unique textile cartography. These elements guided visitors through the emotional complexities of holding onto ancestral roots while building new societal ties in a foreign environment.
Key project execution involved a strategic coalition including the Österreichisches Lateinamerika-Institut, the Wiener VHS, and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. This institutional network guaranteed a high degree of academic rigor and public accessibility for the gathered archival materials.
This museum-led initiative bridges generations of artistic expression by transforming municipal venues into sites of deep historical reflection. By elevating these diverse voices into an official permanent collection, the project expands Austria’s institutional memory and secures a forward-looking foundation for transatlantic civic dialogue.
