The Long Night of the Sciences 2024 dazzled the City of Berlin
Numerous scientific institutions and laboratories opened their doors on this occasion
June 26th, 2024On 22 June 2024, numerous scientific institutions in Berlin and Potsdam invited visitors to laboratories, archives, libraries and lecture halls that are otherwise not open to the public. From 5 PM until midnight, visitors participated in exciting experiments, learned about current research results and enjoyed stimulating conversations.
What makes the Long Night of the Sciences so special every year is the personal encounter between scientists and citizens, the thrilling experience of discovering usually "hidden" places, and the vivid atmosphere of a nightly event. Above all, it's not only the visitors who learn a lot this night - the scientists, too, get inspiration and useful feedback from their dialogue with the public. Therefore, discussion groups and join-in activities have increased from year to year, including over 300 events for children and young people.
In this year’s warm summer temperatures, around 60 scientific and science-related institutions in Berlin opened their doors for the Long Night of the Sciences, inviting attendees to take a behind-the-scenes look at research and science.
With experiments, science shows, lectures, lab tours, and many other formats, a varied program was offered: The Long Night of the Sciences provided deep insights into natural sciences and technology, education and research, human and social sciences, medicine and health, arts and culture.
"I am delighted by how many people from all over Germany and the world came to Berlin this year to experience the Long Night of the Sciences. The around 60 scientific and science-related institutions offered an especially diverse program in 2024, captivating not only adults but also many children with the wonders of science. In a time when information is available anytime and anywhere, this enthusiasm and the desire to experience things on-site is by no means taken for granted. I am already looking forward to the Long Night of the Sciences 2025 and hope that we can inspire even more people with scientific topics," says Prof. Dr. Julia von Blumenthal, Chairwoman of the LNDW e.V. and President of Humboldt University of Berlin, on the occasion of the event.
