The exhibition that began last year in Madrid at the Sefarad-Israel Center, remembering the Jews and Spanish republicans deported to Mauthausen, can now be visited in Austria, at the Mauthausen Memorial (Erinnerungsstraße 1, 4310 Mauthausen) until October 31, 2024.

On May 5, 2024, the exhibition opened, celebrating the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp and its annexed camps. This exhibition was carried out under the curatorship of the historian Josep Calvet and with the technical support of Christian Dürr, from the Mauthausen Memorial.

Last year the exhibition was held at the Sefarad-Israel Center in Madrid. Through testimonies and photographs, it tries to tell the coexistence of the Jews and Spanish Republicans interned in the concentration camp in Austria. The exhibition has 38 designs through which you can learn the history of these trajectories with information in Spanish and English. With “Mauthausen: shared memories” they seek to rescue the memories of the deportation from oblivion and contribute to their compilation, while paying tribute to the people who suffered it.

The project is the work of the Sefarad-Israel Center and the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, which, in Spain, had the collaboration of the Community of Madrid and the Madrid City Council, and the support of the German Embassy, the Cultural Forum of Austria, the Embassy of Poland, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation and the AMICAL of Mauthausen and other fields.

To carry out the project in Mauthausen, this Embassy of Spain in Austria has had the invaluable support of the Mauthausen Memorial KZ – Gedenkstätte.

The inauguration had the intervention of the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Mr. Ángel Víctor Torres Pérez, and in the presence of the Minister of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, Mr. Pablo Bustinduy Amador, the Secretary of State of Democratic Memory, Mr. Fernando Martínez López, present the associations of victims of Spain and descendants of Spanish republicans, and the associations of different nations and representatives of the Governments of the countries with victims in these camps.
