H.E. Nguyen Dac Thanh is an accomplished Vietnamese diplomat with a comprehensive background in economic affairs and international relations. Born on May 29, 1974, in the Ha Nam province of Vietnam, he pursued his early education at the National Economics University in Hanoi, graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 1994. He expanded his academic foundations abroad as a visiting scholar at the Strathclyde Graduate Business School in the United Kingdom, and later earned a Master of Arts in International Affairs from the prestigious Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States under a Ford Foundation scholarship.

Ambassador Thanh began his professional journey with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam in 1995, spending over a decade working within the Economic Department. His international diplomatic assignments began to flourish when he served as the Economic Counsellor at the Vietnamese Embassy in the United Kingdom from 2009 to 2013. Upon returning to Hanoi, he took on the role of Deputy Director-General of the Department of Economic Affairs before being posted as Minister Counsellor at the Vietnamese Embassy in China from 2016 to 2019. Before his current appointment, he served as the Director-General of the Department for Party and Mass Organization Affairs. In August 2025, Ambassador Thanh officially assumed his role as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Federal Republic of Germany, presenting his credentials to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. His tenure focuses extensively on upgrading economic, trade, and strategic partnerships as the two nations mark half a century of formal ties.

History

The Social Republic of Vietnam and Germany maintain good bilateral relations. In October 2011, a strategic partnership was established between the two countries and signed by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Vietnamese Prime Minister Dung.

This partnership aims to strengthen the political, economic, cultural and developmental relations between the two countries. Germany also supports the reform of the Vietnamese legal system thanks to the so-called German-Vietnamese Law Dialogue.

Both countries are also involved in a solid cooperation process in the fields of education, energy and environment.
