The Ambassador
Amb. H.E. Luis Bermúdez
His Excellency Luis Homero Bermúdez Álvarez is the current Ambassador of Uruguayto the United Kingdom, presenting his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Charles III in early 2025. He is also accredited as the Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Bermúdez Álvarez has had an extensive and varied career within the Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the foreign service. Before his current post in London, he held several high-level positions in Montevideo, including Director General for Political Affairs (February 2023 - March 2024) and Deputy Director General for Political Affairs (March 2021 - January 2023).
His international diplomatic experience also includes a significant tenure as the Deputy Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the United Nations in New York, where he served for over five years (December 2015 - December 2020). He also previously served as the Ambassador of Uruguay to South Africa from May 2010 to December 2012, a period during which he notably engaged in expanding bilateral trade and enjoyed the experience of the 2010 FIFA World Cup held there. Early in his career, he served as Consul General and Head of the Trade & Investment Bureau at the Consulate General of Uruguay in Dubai.
Academically, Bermúdez Álvarez is an Attorney at Law, having earned his law degree from the Faculty of Law - University of Uruguay (1983-1987). He also holds a Master's degree in Cooperation & Development from the Universidad Complutense Madrid (2002-2003). He is known for engaging in discussions on various topics, including the political nature of football and Uruguay's use of renewable energy.
