The Ambassador
H.E. Ham Sang-wook
H.E. Ham Sang-wook is a South Korean career diplomat who serves as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna. He has held several senior positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, specialising in multilateral diplomacy, international security, and diplomatic coordination.
Prior to his appointment to Vienna, Ambassador Ham Sang-wook served as Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, where he was involved in South Korea’s engagement with international organizations and global governance issues. His diplomatic career also includes work related to disarmament, international security, and Korea’s relations with European partners. In Austria, he focuses on strengthening cooperation in science, technology, innovation, trade, culture, and multilateral affairs.
History
Austria and the Republic of Korea established diplomatic relations in 1892, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Joseon concluded a Treaty of Friendship and Commerce. Modern diplomatic relations resumed in 1963 following the establishment of the Republic of Korea. South Korea maintains an embassy in Vienna, which also serves as its Permanent Mission to the international organizations based there. Bilateral relations are excellent and focus on trade, technology, innovation, research, renewable energy, and cultural exchange.
