The Embassy of San Marino in Vienna

The Ambassador

H.E. Manuel J. Maioli

H.E. Manuel J. Maioli serves as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of San Marino to Austria, with additional accreditation to several international organisations based in Vienna. He is a Sammarinese diplomat and politician with experience in international relations and public affairs. Before his diplomatic appointment, Maioli served in San Marino’s political institutions, including as a member of the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale), San Marino’s legislative body.

As ambassador, Maioli represents San Marino in Austria and within Vienna-based international organisations, reflecting the importance that small states place on multilateral diplomacy. His work focuses on maintaining San Marino’s relations with Austria, promoting cooperation in areas such as tourism, culture, education, and international law, while also advancing San Marino’s interests within organisations such as the United Nations system and the OSCE.

History

San Marino and Austria maintain longstanding and friendly relations, with diplomatic contacts dating back to the establishment of formal relations in the 20th century. Both countries share a tradition of European cooperation, respect for international law, and active engagement in multilateral organisations despite their different sizes.

Relations are characterised by cooperation in cultural diplomacy, tourism, education, and international affairs. Austria and San Marino cooperate closely within European and international organisations, including the United Nations and the OSCE. Due to San Marino’s small size, relations with Austria are particularly focused on political dialogue, cultural exchange, and support for San Marino’s participation in international forums.

San Marino does not maintain a traditional large embassy building in Vienna; its ambassador is accredited to Austria and represents San Marino in Vienna-based international affairs.
