Choe Il is a North Korean diplomat who served as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He represented Pyongyang in London for a lengthy period during which bilateral contacts focused on diplomatic communication, consular affairs and the difficult issues surrounding security and sanctions. History
The United Kingdom and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea established diplomatic relations on 12 December 2000, after decades in which the two countries had stood on opposite sides of the Korean War and the Cold War. Resident embassies were subsequently opened in Pyongyang and London. The relationship has remained limited and has focused heavily on nuclear and missile issues, human rights, sanctions, humanitarian questions and basic diplomatic communication. The British Embassy in Pyongyang was closed during the COVID-19 pandemic and has not returned to normal operations. In 2026 the DPRK also reduced the level of its representation in London following a dispute over British sanctions.
