The Ambassador
Amb. Chandra Kumar Ghimire
Chandra Kumar Ghimire is a former senior Nepalese civil servant and diplomat. He spent roughly 35 years in public administration and retired in 2021 after holding one of the highest bureaucratic posts in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies. His career also included service in the Office of the Prime Minister, the National Planning Commission and as Consul General in Kolkata before his appointment to the United Kingdom.
History
Bilateral ties between Nepal and the United Kingdom are uniquely profound and deeply historic; the UK shares with Nepal its oldest continuous foreign diplomatic relationship, formalized by the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816. The embassy occupies a monumental, palatial Grade II listed Victorian mansion built in the 1863-65 era, spectacularly situated at 12a Kensington Palace Gardens—London’s most exclusive diplomatic avenue, famously known as "Billionaires' Row."
The Embassy of Nepal in London functions as a premier operational command post for executing bilateral economic partnerships, mountaineering tourism statecraft, and military-security coordination between Kathmandu and Whitehall. Under Ambassador Ghimire’s extensive economic background, a foremost mandate of the mission involves operationalizing the Nepal-UK Economic Partnership Forum. The embassy works seamlessly with the City of London financial institutions to channel heavy British institutional investment into Nepal's massive hydroelectric energy potential, digital tech services, and cross-border infrastructure projects.
A historically distinct and vital component of the mission's profile is the coordination of deep military ties centering on the Brigade of Gurkhas—the legendary Nepalese soldiers who have served with unmatched valor in the British Army for over two centuries. The embassy’s dedicated Defence Attaché staff coordinates closely with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Whitehall regarding veteran welfare, pensions, and bilateral security training.
Concurrently, the mission actively advances high-value alpine and ecotourism promotion—consistently hosting high-profile celebrations like Everest Day to engage British mountaineering syndicates—while running a highly active, digitized consular section that organizes mobile passport camps across remote UK territories (and extended jurisdictions like Ireland and the Cayman Islands) to support the extensive, highly successful Nepalese professional, medical, and student diaspora community thriving across the British Isles.
