The Ambassador
Amb. Dr. Ali El Mhamdi
Ambassador Ali El Mhamdi is a Moroccan diplomat, legal scholar and academic serving as Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Austria and Slovakia, and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the international organisations based in Vienna, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). He is also an Associate Professor at the Moroccan Academy of Diplomatic Studies (AMED) and the National School of Administration (ENSA). He obtained a Doctorate of State in Public Law from Paris II Assas-Sorbonne University in 1982.
Throughout his diplomatic career, Ambassador El Mhamdi has held several senior positions within the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Director of Human Resources, Director of Legal Affairs and Treaties, and Director of Consular and Social Affairs. He has also served as Legal Adviser at the Moroccan Embassy in France, Consul General of Morocco in Bordeaux, and Ambassador of Morocco to Lebanon and the Netherlands before his appointment to Austria. He has participated in numerous bilateral and multilateral negotiations, including as Morocco’s representative to the UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee (Legal Affairs), head of delegations for maritime border negotiations with Spain and negotiations on the Morocco–EU Readmission Agreement, and chairman of Moroccan delegations to international organisations based in Vienna. Ambassador El Mhamdi is also the author of several publications on public law, migration, diplomatic law and international relations.
History
The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Vienna represents Morocco’s diplomatic interests in Austria and serves as its Permanent Mission to several international organisations headquartered in Vienna. While publicly available institutional sources do not provide a detailed historical account of the establishment or early development of the embassy, the mission plays an important role in strengthening political, economic, cultural and multilateral cooperation between Morocco and Austria.
Austria and Morocco maintain friendly and long-standing bilateral relations, officially established in 1783 through a Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between the Habsburg Monarchy and the Sultanate of Morocco. Today, cooperation extends across political dialogue, trade, investment, renewable energy, tourism, migration, cultural exchange and multilateral affairs. Austria and Morocco also cooperate closely within international organisations, particularly in Vienna, where Morocco participates actively in forums related to nuclear energy, industrial development, security and international cooperation. The relationship has been reinforced through regular diplomatic contacts and shared interests in areas such as sustainable development, regional stability and dialogue between Europe and Africa.
