The Ambassador
Amb. Iruthisham Adam
Iruthisham Adam is a Maldivian career diplomat and former cabinet minister with more than two decades of public service. Her diplomatic postings have included London, New York and Geneva, where she also served as Permanent Representative to the United Nations. She later held ministerial portfolios for health and youth and sports, served as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and became Foreign Minister in 2026.
History
Bilateral ties between the Maldives and the United Kingdom are exceptionally close, deeply cooperative, and experiencing an unprecedented era of commercial synchronization. The UK was the very first European nation to establish formal diplomatic relations with the Maldives upon its independence in 1965. The High Commission operates from an elegant, highly active independent chancery located at 22 Nottingham Place in the diplomatic and medical district of Marylebone.
The High Commission in London serves as a premier, high-velocity operational command center for executing blue-economy statecraft, climate resilience diplomacy, and sustainable investment attraction between Male and Whitehall. Under High Commissioner Adam’s specialized multilateral background, a paramount mandate of the mission is securing large-scale British green financing for maritime climate-adaptation infrastructures. The embassy works seamlessly with the City of London to channel private capital into the archipelago's advanced coral reef restoration networks, renewable energy grids, and carbon-neutral transit initiatives.
Commercially, the mission works hand-in-hand with British travel syndicates to sustain and optimize the UK's position as one of the single largest tourism source markets for the Maldives, aggressively promoting high-value ecotourism and sustainable hospitality.
Furthermore, the High Commission executes critical maritime governance inside the London-headquartered International Maritime Organization (IMO)—where the Maldives proudly holds a premium multilateral leadership seat as the Second Vice President of the IMO General Assembly. Concurrently, the mission administers a highly efficient consular division, delivering digitized passport processing, legal certifications, and national registry assistance to the growing Maldivian academic, corporate, and professional diaspora community residing throughout the British Isles
