Amb. Zakri Jaafar
Zakri Jaafar is a Malaysian career diplomat who joined the foreign service in 1991. His overseas assignments have included Santiago and Tokyo, and he later served as Ambassador to Jordan and then to Bosnia and Herzegovina. He became High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in 2021 after three decades of diplomatic service.
History
Bilateral relations between Malaysia and the United Kingdom are historic, profoundly fraternal, and experiencing a modern renaissance of deep institutional sync. The High Commission commands a magnificent, palatial diplomatic compound spanning 45-46 Belgrave Square in the heart of London’s ultra-exclusive Belgravia district—a site that has remained a monumental anchor for Malaysian representation since the country achieved independence in 1957.

Under Mr. Ghazali’s active executive steering, a paramount mandate of the mission is operationalizing the historic UK-Malaysia Digital Trade Agreement. This milestone pact aggressively removes regulatory barriers to expand high-tech market access and cross-border digital service liquidity between both nations. Concurrently, the mission manages deep security sync via the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) and capitalizes on the UK’s formal entry into the CPTPP trading bloc.
Commercially, the High Commission works hand-in-hand with MATRADE and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) to funnel massive British institutional capital into Malaysia’s roaring clean-tech, electric vehicle assembly grids, and artificial intelligence corridors—powerfully reinforced by platforms like the Climate Finance Accelerator Malaysia.
Furthermore, the mission coordinates sweeping educational and community frameworks—overseeing extensive transnational education guidelines with British universities to support the thousands of Malaysian scholars residing in the UK—while its high-volume consular and immigration divisions provide streamlined passport processing and manage the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) structures to ensure fluid travel for the large, highly influential Malaysian professional diaspora thriving across the British Isles.
