The Ambassador
Amb. Abdulhadi (Abdulhadi Al-Hwej/Al-Hawij
Ambassador Abdulhadi (Abdulhadi Al-Hwej/Al-Hawij, according to official transliteration sources) is a Libyan diplomat and medical professional serving as Libya’s Ambassador to Austria. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (1999), a Diploma in Diplomacy from the Institute of Diplomatic Studies at the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2009), and a Master’s degree in Health Administration (2012).
Before his diplomatic appointment, Ambassador Abdulhadi held several senior positions in Libya’s health sector. From 2019 to 2021, he served as Director-General of the National Center for Accreditation of Health Institutions, having previously been Senior Consultant and Director-General of the International Cooperation Department at the same institution in 2018. He also served as Head of the Health Office at the Libyan Embassy in Tunis (2015–2018) and as Medical Attaché at the Libyan Embassy in Algeria (non-resident, 2015–2018). Earlier in his career, he held positions at the Libyan Ministry of Health, including Director of the Treatment Department and Chairperson of the Crisis Management Committee and Higher Committee for Treatment.
History
The embassy currently focuses on strengthening bilateral relations, providing consular services, and facilitating political, economic and institutional cooperation between Libya and Austria.
Austria and Libya maintain diplomatic relations based on political dialogue and cooperation, with ties developing particularly after Libya’s independence in 1951. Relations have included cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, migration, culture and humanitarian affairs. Austria has maintained diplomatic representation in Tripoli, while Libya is represented in Vienna both bilaterally and through its engagement with international organisations headquartered in the city, including United Nations bodies. In recent years, bilateral Contacts have focused on supporting stability in Libya, encouraging political dialogue, and maintaining cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
