Amb. Omar Sultanov
H.E. Mr. Omar Sultanov is one of the most prominent and historically significant figures in the foreign service of the Kyrgyz Republic. A seasoned statesman and academic intellectual, his diplomatic career dates back to the very foundation of the country's independence in the early 1990s. He holds a deep educational background in history and international relations, which laid the groundwork for his long-standing expertise in state-building and multilateral systems.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ambassador Sultanov has occupied several of the highest constitutional offices in Bishkek, including serving as the Head of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic. In the foreign service, he previously served as Kyrgyzstan's Ambassador to Germany and has held critical roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, steering the nation's multi-vector integration strategies. In Geneva, his vast institutional memory and strategic acumen make him a highly authoritative voice on Central Asian security, sustainable development, and environmental protection.
History
Kyrgyzstan’s diplomatic alignment in International Geneva is distinctively defined by its geography as a landlocked, mountainous nation heavily impacted by global climate change and glacier depletion.
The Permanent Mission in Geneva acts as the primary vanguard for Kyrgyzstan's specialized "Mountain Diplomacy"within the United Nations framework. The mission was instrumental in driving the global consensus behind the UN declaration of the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions. Within Geneva's bodies, the mission focuses heavily on collaborating with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and UNEP to secure international funding for glacier preservation, water resource management, and climate adaptation in Central Asia. Additionally, the mission actively represents the country at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to promote transit-transport facilities for Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and works with the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve rural healthcare delivery.
