The Ambassador
Amb. H.E. Hisham Ali Akbar Ibrahim Al-Alawi
H.E. Hisham Ali Akbar Ibrahim Al-Alawi is a senior Iraqi diplomat with extensive experience in bilateral diplomacy, international organizations, and foreign policy. He assumed his position as Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to Austria and Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna in 2026. Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Planning (2023–2026) at Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Throughout his diplomatic career, Ambassador Al-Alawi has held several senior posts, including Ambassador of Iraq to Türkiye (2016–2018) and Ambassador to South Africa (2011–2015), as well as Ambassador to the Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague (2018–2021). His career has focused on international relations, political affairs, human rights, and multilateral diplomacy.
History
Austria recognized the Republic of Iraq shortly after its independence, and diplomatic relations have existed since the 1950s. Iraq maintains an embassy in Vienna, which also serves as its Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Bilateral relations focus on political dialogue, reconstruction support, humanitarian cooperation, and economic exchange. Austria has contributed humanitarian assistance to Iraq and supports international efforts aimed at regional stability and post-conflict recovery.
