The Ambassador
Amb. H.E. Asadollah Eshragh Jahromi
H.E. Asadollah Eshragh Jahromi is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Austria, with concurrent accreditation to the Slovak Republic. A career diplomat with extensive experience in international law and multilateral diplomacy, he assumed his post in 2025 and presented his credentials to Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen on 11 March 2025. He is married and has three children. Dr. Eshragh Jahromi holds a Ph.D. in Public International Law, an M.A. in Regional Studies from the College of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a B.A. in Diplomatic Relations from the same institution. He speaks English and has a basic knowledge of French.
Throughout his diplomatic career, Dr. Eshragh Jahromi has specialized in international law, international peace and security, disarmament, and multilateral affairs. Before his appointment to Vienna, he served as Director General (2022–2025) and Deputy Director General (2019–2022) of the International Peace and Security Department at Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Between 2016 and 2019, he was Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Iran to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Vienna, having previously served there as Counsellor and International Law Expert (2014–2016).
Earlier in his career, Dr. Eshragh Jahromi was Director of the Women International Affairs and Human Rights Department (2011–2014) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as Counsellor and International Law Expert at Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (2008–2011). He also held positions in the Ministry's Human Rights Department and was posted to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Pretoria, South Africa (2002–2005) as an International Law Expert. His long-standing engagement with the United Nations system and other international organizations has made him one of Iran's senior diplomats in the fields of international law and multilateral diplomacy.
History
Austria and Iran maintain longstanding diplomatic relations dating back to the nineteenth century, with formal relations continuing after the establishment of the modern Iranian state. Iran maintains an embassy in Vienna, which also serves as its Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other international organizations. Owing to Vienna's role as host city for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Austria has played an important role as a venue for international negotiations involving Iran, including discussions on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Bilateral relations encompass trade, culture, and scientific cooperation, while Austria supports diplomatic dialogue and peaceful engagement.
