History
Austria and Hungary share one of Europe’s oldest and closest historical relationships, with ties dating back to the Habsburg Monarchy. Modern diplomatic relations between the Republic of Austria and Hungary were established after the First World War, following the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918. The two countries share a border and have maintained particularly close economic, cultural, and regional links.
Relations today are generally close and intensive, based on geographical proximity, EU membership, economic interdependence, and strong people-to-people contacts. Austria is among Hungary’s most important economic partners, while cooperation includes infrastructure, energy, tourism, environmental issues, and regional development.
