In late June the Embassy of Guatemala received an invitation from Mr. Robert Dahl, owner of KARLS to participate in a welcome ceremony in Rostock, Germany. The KARLS Company is renowned in Germany for its gastronomy, trade and roasters and was chosen to partake in the ‘taste of Guatemala’ which centers on Guatemalan coffee.

Mr. Jorge Eduardo Contreras, First Secretary and Consul traveled to the city of Rostock to participate in the ceremony and gave a welcome speech, congratulating the initiative. In addition, the First Secretary and Consul mentioned that relations between Germany and Guatemala are close and friendly. He noted that trade between Guatemala and Germany had an approximate value of 365 million US dollars in 2014. Also Germany accounts for about 1 percent of Guatemala’s foreign trade and only coffee represents more than 50 percent of German imports of Guatemala, followed by snuff, vegetables and fruits.

From the 6th to the 7th of July 2016, intergovernmental consultations were held in Guatemala between Germany and Guatemala on development cooperation. The areas of cooperation which were defined in conjunction with the Guatemalan Government focus on the following points: Democratic governance with equity, education and the environment. The two governments discussed among others on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the future of financial cooperation. Both sides agreed to support the process of strengthening the justice sector institutions through a background of structural reforms.
