Amb. Biruk Mekonnen Demissie
Biruk Mekonnen Demissie is an Ethiopian career diplomat with more than two decades of foreign-service experience. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2002 and has served at Ethiopian missions in London, Berlin and at the United Nations in New York. He was appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom in 2024 and presented his credentials in 2025.
History
Ethiopia and the United Kingdom have one of the oldest formal diplomatic relationships between Britain and an African state, dating to the nineteenth century. Formal relations were established in 1841, although the relationship has also included periods of conflict and intervention, most notably the British expedition to Maqdala in 1868 and Britain's role in the restoration of Emperor Haile Selassie's government during the Second World War. Today the Ethiopian Embassy in London and the British Embassy in Addis Ababa manage a broad relationship covering development, trade, education, security, culture and cooperation with the African Union.
