Amb. Luis Ignacio Vayas Valdivieso

H.E. Mr Luis Ignacio Vayas Valdivieso’s diplomatic career began after he graduated from Law School in Quito, and joined the Diplomatic Academy at Ecuador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Over the years, he completed a master’s in international law at Stockholm University, and is currently a PhD candidate at Granada University in Spain.

Before he arrived in London, he was Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility. Early in his career, he served as Second Secretary in Ecuador’s embassies in Ecuador and Colombia, as Counsellor in Chile, and as Minister-Counselor at Ecuador’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva. He later held senior postings, including Ecuador’s Minister in Spain, with concurrent responsibility for the Netherlands, Andorra, and Morocco.

He currently serves as President of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on plastic pollution, leading efforts to establish a legally binding global treaty to address this pressing environmental challenge. He has also held leadership positions in several UN conventions, including the Basel, Stockholm, and Rotterdam Conventions,
