The Ambassador
H.E. Ms. Elisa Nkerabirori
H.E. Ms. Elisa Nkerabirori is the Permanent Representative of Burundi to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva. She has also served as Ambassador of Burundi to Switzerland since April 2023. Prior to her appointment in Geneva, she served as Ambassador of Burundi to the United Kingdom from October 2021. Earlier, she returned to the position of Assistant to the Minister for Human Rights and Social Affairs at the Ministry of National Solidarity, Social Affairs and Human Rights, a role she had first assumed in 2014.
Ms. Nkerabirori began her diplomatic career in 2006, working as an advisor on legal affairs at Burundi’s diplomatic representations in Brussels and Geneva until 2013. Before entering diplomacy, she worked as a criminal lawyer from 1998 to 2006 and became the first Burundian woman to establish her own law firm. Ms. Nkerabirori holds a degree in Law from the University of Burundi.
History
Burundi became a member of the United Nations on 18 September 1962, shortly after gaining independence. Since joining the UN, Burundi has participated in multilateral diplomacy on issues including peace and security, human rights, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs, and regional cooperation in Africa. The country has engaged with the UN on matters related to peacebuilding, post-conflict recovery, and development, and has participated in UN peacekeeping efforts, including through the contribution of personnel to international missions.
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Burundi to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Burundi in Geneva-based UN institutions and international organizations. The Mission engages on issues including human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, development, and international cooperation. Through its participation in Geneva-based forums, the Mission advances Burundi’s positions within the multilateral system and works with organizations such as the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and other Geneva-based institutions.
