H.E. Ms. Nthisana Motsete-Phillips
H.E. Ms. Nthisana Motsete-Phillips has served as the Permanent Representative of Botswana to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva since 2025, when she presented her credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva. Prior to her appointment, she served as Deputy Director of the Corporate Services and Facilities Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C., from 2023.
Throughout her career, Ms. Motsete-Phillips has held several senior positions in international organizations, including Director of the Administration and General Services Division at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva (2015–2023), Director of Finance and Administration at the Consortium of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) in Montpellier (2014–2015), and Assistant Secretary-General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States Secretariat in Brussels (2010–2014). Earlier in her career, she worked in Botswana's private sector specializing in investment management and finance. She also served as Chief of Accounts at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa (2002–2004) and worked in the Trust Funds and Technical Cooperation Unit of the Accounting Division at United Nations Headquarters in New York (1996–2002).
Ms. Motsete-Phillips holds a Master of Business Administration from Baruch College, City University of New York (2002) and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Botswana (1993).
History
Botswana became a member of the United Nations on 17 October 1966, shortly after gaining independence on 30 September 1966. Since joining the UN, Botswana has been an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, advocating for sustainable development, good governance, human rights, public health, environmental protection, and regional peace and security. The country has also contributed to UN discussions on development challenges affecting Africa and has participated in several UN bodies and international initiatives.
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Botswana to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Botswana before the United Nations Office at Geneva and the many specialized agencies and international organizations headquartered in the city. The Mission advances Botswana's positions on issues including human rights, labour, health, trade, humanitarian affairs, migration, and sustainable development through participation in Geneva-based multilateral negotiations and cooperation with UN agencies.
