History

Bahrain became a member of the United Nations on 21 September 1971, shortly after gaining independence. Since joining the UN, Bahrain has participated in multilateral diplomacy on issues including international peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, humanitarian affairs, and regional cooperation. Bahrain has served in several UN bodies, including the UN Human Rights Council (2017–2019), and has contributed to discussions on development, dialogue, and international cooperation.

The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Bahrain in Geneva-based UN institutions and specialized organizations. The Mission engages with international bodies on issues including human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, trade, development, and other areas addressed through the Geneva multilateral system. The Mission also works alongside Bahrain’s other permanent representations to international organizations, including those in New York and Vienna, to advance the country’s foreign policy priorities within the United Nations framework.
