The Ambassador
H.E. Armen Papikyan
H.E. Armen Papikyan is the current Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Austria and Permanent Representative of Armenia to the international organisations based in Vienna. He is a career diplomat with extensive experience in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, particularly within European institutions and international organisations.
Prior to his appointment to Vienna, Papikyan held several senior diplomatic positions within Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including roles connected to European affairs and multilateral cooperation. His diplomatic work has focused on Armenia’s relations with European partners, international security, and cooperation within organisations such as the OSCE and the United Nations.
History
Austria and Armenia established diplomatic relations on 24 January 1992, following Armenia’s independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Since then, relations have developed steadily, with cooperation focusing on political dialogue, economic relations, cultural exchange, and cooperation within international organisations.
The relationship is considered friendly and constructive, with Austria supporting Armenia through development cooperation programmes and European initiatives. Vienna’s role as a centre for international diplomacy has also contributed to Armenian-Austrian cooperation, particularly through the OSCE and United Nations frameworks.
