H.E. Ms. Ana Maria De Oliveira
H.E. Ms. Ana Maria de Oliveira has served as the Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations Office at Geneva since April 2025, when she presented her credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva. Prior to her appointment, she was Angola’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO (2020–2025). Earlier in her career, she served as Consultant to the President of Angola (2018–2020), Minister of Culture (1994–1999), Vice Minister of Culture (1993–1994), General Commissioner for Expo '98 in Lisbon (1998), and was a Member of the National Assembly from 1992 to 2012.
Ms. de Oliveira has represented Angola at numerous UNESCO conferences and other international cultural and diplomatic initiatives. She holds a degree in Anthropology from NOVA University Lisbon and a diploma in African Religions from the Catholic University of Portugal. She has also trained as a social educator at the Institute of Education and Social Services in Luanda and is pursuing a doctorate at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. An accomplished scholar, she has published several works on anthropology and culture and is a member of multiple professional anthropological associations.
History
Angola became a member of the United Nations on 1 December 1976, shortly after gaining independence in 1975. Since then, the country has participated actively in the work of the United Nations, particularly on issues concerning peacebuilding, sustainable development, decolonization, human rights, and cooperation in Africa. Angola has served three terms as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2003–2004, 2015–2016, and 2024–2025), where it has promoted conflict prevention, regional security, and stronger cooperation between the United Nations and African regional organizations. Angola also contributes to the work of UN agencies and has engaged in multilateral initiatives through organizations based in Geneva, including the Human Rights Council and the World Health Organization.
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Angola to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Angola in Geneva-based UN bodies and specialized agencies. The Mission is responsible for advancing Angola’s positions on issues including human rights, health, labour, trade, migration, intellectual property, and humanitarian affairs across the UN system. According to the United Nations Office at Geneva, the Mission has been headed by H.E. Ms. Ana Maria de Oliveira since 3 April 2025, when she presented her credentials as Permanent Representative. She succeeded H.E. Mr. Tete António, who served as Permanent Representative before becoming Angola’s Minister of External Relations. The Mission continues to support Angola’s engagement with multilateral diplomacy through the UN Office at Geneva and other international organizations.
