“Staatsoper für alle” Returns to Bebelplatz for Its 20th Edition
Open-air opera and symphonic concerts take over central Berlin

Bebelplatz will once again become an open-air stage as “Staatsoper für alle” returns on May 23 and 24, 2026, celebrating the twentieth edition of one of Berlin’s largest public classical music events. Organised by the in partnership with BMW, the annual programme brings opera and orchestral music into the centre of the city with free public performances.
This year’s edition opens on Saturday with a live broadcast of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Nabucco. On Sunday, the Staatskapelle Berlin will perform live under the direction of General Music Director Christian Thielemann. The programme includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, also known as the “Pastoral Symphony,” and the Egmont Overture by Beethoven.
Unlike conventional opera performances inside concert halls, “Staatsoper für alle” is designed as an open public event without ticket requirements or limited seating capacity. Audiences gather directly on Bebelplatz, where the square is transformed into a temporary cultural venue in the heart of Berlin. Seating is not provided, although visitors may bring their own chairs or purchase seating on-site before the performances begin.
Over the past two decades, the event has become a defining feature of Berlin’s summer cultural calendar. Its setting between Unter den Linden and some of the city’s best-known historic institutions gives the performances a distinctly public character, combining monumental repertoire with the atmosphere of a large civic gathering.
Organisers have announced barrier-free facilities, including designated areas for visitors using wheelchairs or mobility aids, as well as catering and accessible toilets. Streets surrounding Unter den Linden are expected to close approximately two hours before the beginning of each event.
With free admission and performances staged in one of Berlin’s most recognisable public squares, “Staatsoper für alle” continues to position classical music within everyday urban life, rather than behind the formal boundaries of the opera house.
