The Sri Lanka High Commission in the United Kingdom hosted a meeting on 9 February 2026 with Sri Lankan women entrepreneurs participating in the first women-focused SheTrades trade mission from Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom. The delegation met with Nimal Senadheera to discuss opportunities for expanding women-led export businesses into the UK market. The initiative forms part of the International Trade Centre’s SheTrades Commonwealth+ Programme, delivered in collaboration with the UK Government, the British High Commission in Colombo, and the Sri Lanka Export Development Board.

The meeting brought together Sri Lankan women entrepreneurs alongside representatives from the International Trade Centre and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. During the session, the entrepreneurs shared their experiences of building export-oriented businesses, highlighting how their ventures create employment, empower local communities, and contribute to inclusive economic growth. The dialogue provided an opportunity for participants to exchange perspectives on the opportunities and challenges facing women-led enterprises seeking to enter international markets.

Discussions also explored the advantages offered by the Developing Countries Trading Scheme, which grants eligible Sri Lankan products zero-tariff access to the UK market following recent policy adjustments. Participants highlighted the role of the SheTrades Sri Lanka Hub, hosted by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board in partnership with the International Trade Centre, in preparing women entrepreneurs for global trade. The initiative supports business capacity building, strengthens international visibility, and facilitates connections with potential buyers and partners.

High Commissioner Senadheera commended the entrepreneurs for their commitment and vision, recognising their contribution to Sri Lanka’s economic development and export diversification. He also expressed appreciation to the International Trade Centre, the UK Government, and the Sri Lanka Export Development Board for supporting programmes that expand market access for women-led businesses. The discussion was moderated by Somasena Mahadiulwewa.

The engagement highlighted the role of economic diplomacy in promoting inclusive trade and strengthening bilateral economic relations. Initiatives such as the SheTrades mission help integrate women entrepreneurs into global value chains while deepening commercial links between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. By supporting women-led enterprises and fostering cross-border partnerships, the Sri Lanka High Commission in London aims to contribute to sustainable economic growth and broaden Sri Lanka’s long-term presence in international markets.
