Showcases Mineral Assets and Investment Opportunities in Germany
Argentinian Secretary of Mining Leads Strategic Meetings and Signs Bilateral Geological Cooperation Agreement
May 07th, 2025As part of an official economic agenda in Germany, Argentina’s Secretary of Mining, Luis Lucero, led a series of high-level meetings in Hamburg and Berlin, aiming to position Argentina as a reliable and strategic partner for the supply of critical minerals. With the global demand for minerals like lithium and copper rapidly growing due to the energy transition, electromobility, and advancements in artificial intelligence, Argentina is actively expanding its mining sector and export capacity.
Secretary Lucero took part in the 75th Annual Business Conference for Latin America in Hamburg, participating in the panel “Access to Critical Minerals”. Addressing an audience of leading German industry representatives and financial institutions, he outlined Argentina’s mining policy, rich geological potential, and the latest developments in mining projects, particularly in lithium and copper.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Embassy of Argentina in Germany organized a high-level roundtable titled “Argentina: Securing the Future of Critical Mineral Supply Chains”, co-chaired by Lucero and Ambassador Brun. The event brought together select investors, banks, and industry leaders to discuss Argentina’s mining outlook, investment incentives under the Régimen de Incentivos para Grandes Inversiones (RIGI), and the sector’s competitiveness and sustainability.
Key industry figures such as Michael Meding (CEO of Los Azules Project) and Micha Zauner (CEO of Deutsche E Metalle) shared their experiences developing copper and lithium projects in Argentina, highlighting the country’s growing significance as a mineral supplier.
Amid growing interest in Argentina’s mining potential, Secretary Lucero held a crucial meeting with the Economic Council of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, an institution representing major German companies including Airbus and Aurubis, one of the world’s largest copper producers. Lucero emphasized the message: “There is no energy transition without mining”, reaffirming Argentina’s commitment to supporting projects that leverage its mineral resources through a competitive, sustainable, and state-supported mining industry.
The agenda concluded in Berlin with the signing of a bilateral cooperation agreement between the geological services of Argentina and Germany, during a ceremony hosted at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The agreement aims to foster collaboration in geological exploration, enabling knowledge exchange and capacity-building initiatives between the two countries.
At the signing, Lucero stressed the importance of boosting exploration activities not only for lithium and copper but for other critical minerals as well: “Through this agreement with the German Geological Service, we expand our capacity to conduct more extensive exploration tasks. It will serve as a platform for deepening joint efforts.”
The event was attended by senior figures from the German industrial sector, including board members of Mercedes-Benz, a key player in the electric vehicle market, and Micha Zauner, CEO of Deutsche E Metalle. Both companies are actively engaged in partnerships linked to lithium projects in Argentina, forming essential links in integrating Argentine resources into European production chains and advancing the electric mobility industry.
