Portuguese Youth Orchestra to open Prestigious Berlin Festival
The Youth Orchestra is set to perform both new and classical pieces
August 05th, 2024On the occasion of the 2800th anniversary of the first Olympic Games and on the initiative of the Directorate General for Public Diplomacy of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Greece in Vienna, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of France, opened an exhibition on Friday June 5th at the Vienna International Centre.
The JOP will present "Apneia" by Portuguese composer João Caldas, a piece making its debut in Germany and competing for the festival's composition prize. The concert program also includes "Poème Symphonique" by Gyorgy Ligeti and Antonin Dvorák's 9th Symphony, "From the New World".
The JOP made its debut at this festival in 2015 and returned in 2017, during which composer Mariana Vieira won the composition prize with "Raiz," a concerto for oboe, clarinet, tuba, harp, double bass, marimba, and orchestra.
The Portuguese orchestra returned two years later, in 2019, for the festival's 20th edition. Composer João Godinho followed in Mariana Vieira's footsteps by winning the composition prize with "Alcance".
Under Pedro Carneiro's baton, the JOP will present a program that includes Beethoven's "Coriolan Overture," Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, and once again Dvorák's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World".
According to the JOP, "'Apneia' (written in 2020 and adapted for the JOP in 2024) oscillates between the primordial vigor of inspiration and expiration, through mystical and hypnotic sonorities".
