The exhibition, held at Villages Taproom in Deptford from 8 April to 7 June 2026, presents a series of photographs taken during a recent journey across Japan. The project focuses on daily life, particularly shopkeepers and market stall holders encountered in lesser-known locations. Through this approach, the exhibition offers a perspective on local communities and human interactions, emphasising the social fabric of contemporary Japan.

The photographic series includes fourteen printed works displayed on-site, complemented by a wider digital slideshow. According to the event description published on the official Japan–UK Events Calendar, the images were captured during a trip across Japan, documenting encounters with local traders and everyday environments. 

By featuring scenes of ordinary life rather than major landmarks, the exhibition contributes to a broader understanding of Japanese culture beyond conventional representations. This aligns with the embassy’s strategy of supporting diverse cultural initiatives, including independent artistic projects that engage directly with local audiences in the United Kingdom.

The event is part of the Japan–UK Events Calendar, an official platform managed by the embassy to centralise cultural programming across the country. The platform promotes exhibitions, performances, and educational initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral cultural exchange and increasing public access to Japanese culture. 

Through initiatives such as “Portraits of Japan,” the embassy continues to facilitate cultural dialogue by supporting accessible and community-based events. These activities reinforce people-to-people connections and contribute to the visibility of Japanese cultural expression within London’s diverse artistic landscape.
