Peru Reaffirms Commitment to Global Peacekeeping at UN Conference in Berlin
A total of 254 military personnel from the Andean nation are deployed across six conflict zones
May 28th, 2025Peru played an active role in the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference, which took place in Berlin on 13–14 May. The country reaffirmed its commitment to international peace and security by demonstrating its strong involvement in global peacekeeping missions.
The Peruvian delegation was led by Ambassador Enrique Román Morey, Peru's Permanent Representative to the UN. It also included Augusto Cabrera, the Director of Multilateral Organisations and Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Johnny Chuquimayo, the Head of International Affairs at the Joint Command of the Armed Forces. In his address, Ambassador Morey emphasised that Peru currently deploys 254 Armed Forces personnel in six UN peacekeeping missions, nearly 20% of whom are women.
A key announcement was the reconfiguration of Peru’s Construction and Airfield Maintenance Company, which is currently operating in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), into a multi-role engineering unit. Peru is also the only Latin American and Caribbean country to contribute an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to MINUSCA, whose high-risk operations have saved countless lives.
Additional commitments include deploying specialised police teams to address sexual and gender-based violence and conduct forensic investigations, and providing continued support for UN training courses, such as the Military Observers and Staff Officers programmes. Peru will also implement 'train-the-trainer' programmes to strengthen the preparation of UN Civilian Protection Platoons.
In line with its commitment to multilateralism, Peru announced plans to integrate personnel from partner countries into its engineering company deployed in MINUSCA. UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix praised Peru’s active role and regional leadership, referencing in particular the First Latin America and the Caribbean Peacekeeping Conference, which Peru hosted in September 2022 and which launched an ongoing regional cooperation process.
