Paavo Järvi Appointed Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra
Estonian maestro to lead LPO into its centenary decade from 2028
March 17th, 2026The London Philharmonic Orchestra has announced the appointment of Paavo Järvi as its next Chief Conductor & Artistic Advisor, effective from the 2028/29 season. Järvi will succeed Edward Gardner, who will conclude his tenure as Principal Conductor at the end of the 2027/28 season after seven years of artistic leadership. The appointment marks a significant moment for the Orchestra as it prepares for its centenary in 2032, positioning itself for a new phase of artistic development and international engagement.
A Grammy Award-winning conductor, Järvi is widely recognised for his interpretations of the symphonic repertoire and his commitment to contemporary music. He currently serves as Music Director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, while also leading the Pärnu Music Festival and the Estonian Festival Orchestra. His international career has included collaborations with leading ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic. Born in Tallinn, Järvi trained at the Tallinn School of Music before continuing his studies in the United States, including at the Curtis Institute of Music. The artistic partnership between Järvi and the London Philharmonic Orchestra is already taking shape during the current season, with performances including Symphony No. 2 and Piano Concerto No. 2 at the Royal Festival Hall, followed by international appearances in Budapest and Athens. These engagements offer early insight into the artistic direction of the future collaboration, which will build on a shared commitment to orchestral excellence and the development of emerging talent.
Meanwhile, Edward Gardner’s tenure has been marked by ambitious programming, international touring, and critically acclaimed recordings. His work has combined core symphonic repertoire with major 20th-century and contemporary works, including landmark performances such as A Child of Our Time, Gurrelieder and Symphony No. 8. His programming has also highlighted British composers within a global context, contributing to the Orchestra’s distinct artistic identity. Reflecting on the transition, David Burke stated: “From the first time I heard Paavo Järvi perform in 2023, it was clear that he shared a remarkable musical connection with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. I am immensely proud to announce this new partnership and excited to see it grow as we approach our 2032 centenary. I am also delighted that Edward Gardner will remain an integral part of this journey. His tenure continues to define a period of extraordinary growth and, with two further seasons already planned, we look forward to continuing our inspiring collaboration for many years to come.” Jesús Herrera added: “We are thrilled to welcome Paavo Järvi to the LPO family. He is a remarkable Maestro whose artistic brilliance and deep humanity perfectly embody our orchestra’s values. I would also like to thank Edward Gardner for his exceptional work and musical inspiration. With the Orchestra’s distinguished history of exceptional artistic leadership, we are proud to carry that legacy forward through our future plans with both Ed and Paavo.” Edward Gardner remarked: “It has been an immense privilege to serve as Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Over these seasons we have explored extraordinary repertoire together and built projects of which I am deeply proud. With two and a half years still ahead of us, I look forward to continuing that journey with the musicians and audiences who make this orchestra so remarkable.” Paavo Järvi stated: “I am honoured to take on the role of Chief Conductor & Artistic Advisor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a privilege to work with an ensemble of such artistry and tradition, and I look forward to the music we will make together.
Beyond its artistic significance, the appointment also reflects the role of cultural diplomacy in strengthening European and international cultural ties. The leadership of an Estonian conductor at a major British orchestra highlights the continued exchange of artistic talent across borders, reinforcing collaboration within the global cultural sector. Such partnerships contribute not only to artistic innovation but also to the cultural economy, international reputation, and soft power of participating countries.
As the London Philharmonic Orchestra approaches its centenary, the appointment of Paavo Järvi signals a forward-looking vision that builds on a strong legacy while embracing new artistic opportunities. Through sustained international collaboration and investment in future generations of musicians, the Orchestra aims to remain a leading force in the global classical music landscape for decades to come.
